Bonjour. It has been a little longer than usual since I have written.  My time has been dominated by publishing deadlines and Paris apartment disasters (although I am learning that the words “disaster” and “Paris” are commonly used together when you live there). 

Thanksgiving left as quickly as it arrived. This year it was at our home in L.A. We ate a late dinner because many guests were coming to Los Angeles from out of town. Throughout the day I was cooking and my friend Celine was in the kitchen with me. When I reached in the baking pantry for something, I saw the molasses and the muscovado sugar. I grabbed them. soupe de pêches au gingembre frais 
(peach “soup” with fresh ginger)

serves 8

what you need:

sorbet
2 cups fresh peach juice from yellow peaches

3 cups chopped ripe yellow peaches
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon fresh ginger zest

peach soup
4 beautiful white peaches, cut into 8 wedges

3 cups fresh peach juice from yellow peaches

garnish
melange de pain d’épice (as needed) or ground cinnamon 
pink and/or golden sanding sugar

September comes with a renewed energy in the air. Vacations are over and children go back to school. Getting back into a routine, we look at our quick-filling calendars and our lives with new vigor.  Often that vigor includes the desire to eat better foods, try new things, and develop healthier habits. I am often asked about ways to incorporate specific food items into home-cooked meals that are easy to make for the whole family. Flaxseeds are one of those ingredients and it is the desire to incorporate this healthy ingredient into our new Fall repertoire that is the inspiration for this week’s simple pleasure: honey and soy-roasted eggplant with flaxseeds.
